Why go
The river does the walking for you
Danum makes you earn your sightings; the Kinabatangan hands them over from a boat seat. The forest here is a narrow corridor along the river, which concentrates everything — wild orangutans feeding in riverside figs, proboscis monkeys crashing into their roost trees at dusk, pygmy elephant herds swimming the channel when the mood takes them.
Cruises run at first light and again before dusk, two hours at a time, from lodges at Sukau and Bilit. Between them: oxbow lakes, estuarine crocodiles logging in the shallows, and eight possible hornbill species along the banks. The Gomantong Caves — the famous swiftlet and bat caves — are a short detour and worth the smell.

How it fits the trip
