Questions, answered honestly

The things travellers actually ask — with the answers a guide gives, not a brochure.

How do I actually get there?

Fly Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu (about 55 minutes with MASwings), then your lodge's transfer drives you in — 2 to 2.5 hours, the last 80-odd kilometres on gravel. Transfers are included with all three stays. Full detail on the getting-there pages.

Will I see a wild orangutan?

Danum has one of the best wild populations anywhere and most multi-night stays produce a sighting, especially in fruiting season — but they are wild, and no honest operator guarantees one. Fresh night nests, at minimum, are near-certain.

What about the clouded leopard?

Treat any sighting as a gift. A handful happen each year, almost all on night drives. Leopard cats and civets, on the other hand, appear most nights.

Is there phone signal or Wi-Fi?

Effectively none on the road and limited service at the stays — Borneo Rainforest Lodge has Wi-Fi in common areas; the Study Centre and INFAPRO are more basic. Warn your inbox and enjoy it.

Do I need malaria tablets or vaccinations?

Speak to a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before flying — recommendations change and depend on your route and history. Long sleeves at dusk and repellent are sensible everywhere in Sabah regardless.

How bad are the leeches, really?

Present, harmless, mildly comic. Leech socks reduce the encounters to nearly zero; the bites you do get itch less than a mosquito's. Nobody has ever gone home early because of leeches.

How fit do I need to be?

If you can walk a few kilometres on uneven ground in humidity, the classic itineraries are yours. Borneo Rainforest Lodge suits gentler paces; longer Study Centre treks and Danum Intensive photography days ask more. Say what's comfortable and the guiding adapts.

How far ahead should I book?

Borneo Rainforest Lodge's 31 rooms sell out months ahead for popular periods, and Sipadan permits (if you're adding diving) are capped daily and allocated in advance. Three to six months ahead is comfortable; more for peak dates. Placeholder — confirm current lead times with the client.

Danum or the Kinabatangan — which one?

Different tools: Danum is deep primary forest where sightings are earned; the Kinabatangan is a river corridor where the boat brings the wildlife to you. The best trips do both — read our comparison article for the honest breakdown.

Can children come?

Yes — the Study Centre's Young Naturalists itinerary is built for families, the nature trail and river sessions work brilliantly for ages ~7+, and guides are good with young attention spans. Borneo Rainforest Lodge welcomes families too; INFAPRO's planting days are a hit with kids.
