Birdwatching
Over 300 species in one forest, including all eight Bornean hornbills, seven pittas and the bird every lister comes for — the Bornean bristlehead.
What it is
Birdwatching, properly done
Over 300 species in one forest, including all eight Bornean hornbills, seven pittas and the bird every lister comes for — the Bornean bristlehead. Danum is simply one of the great birding forests on Earth.
What you'll see
Dawn towers and the canopy walkway for hornbills, trogons and mixed flocks; the trails for pittas and wren-babblers; night walks for frogmouths and owls. Bukit Atur's sea of cloud is the classic curtain-raiser.
Best time & conditions
Birding is superb year-round; fruiting trees move the action week by week and the guides track them. Early starts are non-negotiable — the forest does not lie in.
