Wings & Wonder
The dedicated birding itinerary: three dawns, two towers, seven possible pittas — and the bristlehead as the prize.
Day by day
A flexible template
Timings flex with weather, river levels and what the forest is doing — your guide reads the day.
Arrive & first tower session
Transfer from Lahad Datu (about 2.5 hours), settle in, then an afternoon on the ~33 m observation tower as the hornbills fly to roost. Night birding after dinner: frogmouths and owls.
Bukit Atur & the trails
The 4.45 am alarm: sunrise above the cloud sea at Bukit Atur, then trail birding for pittas, wren-babblers and whatever the fruiting trees have gathered. Afternoon on the Segama loop.
Bristlehead day
A full guided day targeting the Bornean bristlehead and the remaining hornbills, structured around current sightings. Optional night drive.
Final dawn & departure
One more dawn chorus, breakfast, and the transfer to Lahad Datu for onward flights — checklist considerably longer than it arrived.
