Beyond Danum · Big-mammal country

Tabin Wildlife Reserve

A vast lowland reserve east of Lahad Datu — mud volcanoes, elephants, banteng and some of the best night drives in Sabah.

Why go

The other reserve out of Lahad Datu

Tabin is enormous — a mix of regenerating and older forest that big mammals treat as home ground. The set-piece is the Lipad mud volcano: a grey, bubbling clearing where animals come for the minerals, and where tracks in the mud read like a guest book. Elephants, bearded pigs, civets; occasionally banteng, Borneo's wild cattle.

Night drives are Tabin's strength — open country and forest edge mean long sightlines, and the spotlighting is consistently productive: leopard cats most nights, civets always, flying squirrels launching between snags. Fair warning from someone who has donated plenty of blood here: this is leech country. Pack the socks.

Wildlife & highlights

What you're likely to see

  • The Lipad mud volcano and its visiting traffic
  • Bornean pygmy elephants — strong odds on the plantation-edge roads
  • Leopard cats and civets on nearly every night drive
  • Banteng, with luck, at the volcano clearings
  • Hornbills and raptors along the forest edge

Best time

Productive year-round; the mud volcano is easier underfoot in drier spells. Placeholder — confirm preferred months with the client.

Pairing it with Danum

How it fits the trip

Tabin shares Danum's gateway, which makes the pairing efficient: no backtracking, minimal transfer time, two very different forests within reach of one town. See the combination itineraries for suggested day splits.

Getting there

About 1–1.5 hours by road from Lahad Datu (LDU), which is a 55-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu. Coming from Danum, you pass back through town — an easy same-day link. See routes from Lahad Datu.
