What to pack

The honest kit list, from people who've watched a thousand guests discover what they forgot.

Eight things that matter

Pack for humidity, dawn and leeches

Laundry is available at the stays and the dress code is "dry by dinner" — pack light and technical rather than heavy and plentiful.

Leech socks

Non-negotiable on the trails. Calf-length, drawstring top, worn over trousers into your boots. Buy in Lahad Datu or bring your own; the leeches are harmless, persistent and part of the club membership.

Quick-dry everything

Two or three sets of lightweight long trousers and long sleeves — neutral colours, nothing that rustles. Cotton stays wet here; synthetics and merino dry overnight under a fan.

A proper head torch

Night walks, night drives, pre-dawn starts and the path back after dinner. Bring a spare and spare batteries; a red-light mode is kind to wildlife and your companions.

Dry bags

One for the daypack (afternoon downpours arrive on schedule), one for camera kit, one for the paperwork. Humidity gets everything eventually — silica sachets help.

Insect protection

Repellent for dusk, long sleeves as the first line. Danum's lodges will advise on current malaria guidance — ask your travel clinic before flying, and see the FAQ.

Camera & humidity care

Bring double the cards and batteries you think you need — there's limited charging at some stays and no camera shop for 100 km. Silica gel in every bag; let lenses acclimatise before dawn shoots to beat the fogging.

Cash

Draw it in Lahad Datu. Tips, small purchases and anything in town are cash affairs, and the forest has no ATM.

The small stuff

Travel-sickness tablets for the gravel road, reef-safe sunscreen if Semporna is on the route, a swimsuit for the waterfall pools, and binoculars — one pair per person, not per couple. Arguments have started over less.
