Borneo Rainforest Lodge

An award-winning eco-lodge whose five-star standing is earned through conservation, not opulence — 31 chalets on the Danum River, and never more than around sixty guests in the forest at once.

Welcome

Wake to the dawn chorus from your riverside chalet

Gibbons call first, before the light. Then the river appears out of the mist below your balcony, an argus pheasant starts up somewhere behind the ridge, and breakfast can wait. We built this lodge so the forest would always come first — everything we bring in, we carry out again, and nothing is left behind but footprints on the boardwalk.

Days here run on the forest's clock: the canopy walkway before the heat, the river in the slow afternoon, a night drive when the eyeshine begins. In between there is the small matter of dinner beside the water — which guests tend to remember as vividly as the orangutans.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge is operated by Borneo Nature Tours within the Danum Valley Conservation Area, which is owned and protected by Yayasan Sabah.

Dining

Dinner beside the river

The restaurant is a genuine highlight of the lodge — accomplished cuisine served on the forest edge above the Danum River, on a full-board basis. Expect proper cooking, Sabahan ingredients treated with care, and the kind of setting that makes a long lunch dangerous to an afternoon itinerary. It is well beyond what anyone expects this deep in a rainforest.

Questions

Before you pack

Fly Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Lahad Datu (LDU) in about 55 minutes, then take the included 2–2.5-hour overland transfer — sealed road first, then about 82 km of gravel through the forest.

Yes — all meals at the riverside restaurant, guided activities, and return Lahad Datu transfers are included in every package.

Danum Valley is one of the best places on Earth to see truly wild orangutans, and sightings are frequent — but this is a wild forest with no feeding platforms, so nothing is guaranteed.

Boardwalks, the canopy walkway and night drives suit most fitness levels; longer waterfall treks are moderately demanding. Tell us about mobility needs when you enquire and we will plan around them.

How to get there

The journey is part of it

Fly Kota Kinabalu (BKI) → Lahad Datu (LDU), about 55 minutes; the lodge's own transfer then takes 2–2.5 hours — sealed road, then roughly 82 km of gravel. Return transfers and guiding are included in full-board packages. Danum Valley is a protected reserve: entry is ranger-accompanied and travel insurance including emergency helicopter evacuation is required.
