Beyond Danum · Gateway town
Sandakan
The north-east gateway to Sepilok and the Kinabatangan — a harbour city with more history than most Sabahan towns, and the airport that starts a wildlife loop.
Why go
History, then wildlife
Sandakan (SDK) is the way in to Sabah's best-known wildlife circuit: 25 minutes to Sepilok and its orangutan and sun bear centres, and around two hours to the Kinabatangan lodges at Sukau and Bilit. Most Danum-plus-river itineraries start or finish here.
The town itself carries real history — a wartime past marked by the Sandakan Memorial Park, the Agnes Keith house on the hill, and a genuinely good Sunday market. Worth half a day if your flights allow; not a reason to linger if they don't.
What's there
Why you'll pass through

Pairing it with Danum
How it fits the trip
Sandakan opens the north end of the loop that pairs so well with Danum: rehabilitation at Sepilok, wildlife on the river, then overland to the valley for the wild finale. See the combination itineraries for day splits.
Getting there
Fly into Sandakan (SDK) from Kota Kinabalu; reach Danum overland via Lahad Datu. See getting there.
