Birds of Danum · Hornbill

Oriental pied hornbill

Anthracoceros albirostris

The approachable one — smaller, black-and-white, and common enough at forest edges that it's often a first-day tick.

Field notes

If you see just one hornbill on a short stay, it's likely this one. Oriental pied hornbills are smaller, tolerant of forest edges and secondary growth, and often knock about near the lodges and along the river — black and white, with a modest cream casque and a loud, laughing voice.

Their adaptability makes them the gateway hornbill: an easy, close, satisfying introduction to the family before you go looking for the scarce and spectacular ones deeper in.

Seen in Danum

Forest edges, riverbanks and clearings around all three stays; frequently seen from the walkway and on transfers.

Best site & season

Reliable year-round, any time of day. The most dependable hornbill on a short itinerary.
