Seventy-three kilometres inland from Lahad Datu, the INFAPRO base sits inside a 25,454-hectare expanse of regenerating secondary tropical rainforest. You participate in a globally certified conservation project by planting native dipterocarp saplings to accelerate carbon recovery. The thick undergrowth supports dense populations of small mammals, creating a productive environment to look for rare cats after dark.
The Innoprise-FACE Foundation Rainforest Rehabilitation Project began in 1992. It is a joint venture between the commercial arm of the Yayasan Sabah Group and the FACE Foundation in the Netherlands. The goal is to rehabilitate 25,000 hectares of degraded forest. So far the project has successfully restored 11,864 hectares.
The site holds certification from the Forest Stewardship Council and the Voluntary Carbon Standard. It was the first forestry project in Asia to earn that carbon validation. By planting native trees the team accelerates the carbon recovery of the forest by 50 percent compared to natural regeneration. The revenue from eco-tourism directly funds the ongoing protection of this forest.

You can see rainforest restoration up close and return to comfortable rooms for a rainforest lodge. The 24-hour power makes it an excellent base for people carrying serious camera gear. Breakfast runs from 7am to 8:30am, lunch from 12pm to 1:30pm and dinner from 7pm to 9:30pm. Free-flow coffee, tea and safe drinking water are available all day.

How to get there
The journey is part of it
You reach INFAPRO on a 2–2.5-hour overland transfer from Lahad Datu. Guests are typically collected from the airport or a local hotel. The journey uses a combination of paved regional highways and active gravel logging roads in specialised 4WD vehicles. Rain falls all year in this region so there is no dry season to wait for. April and May are typically the least wet months. Heavy rain between late November and January can make the unpaved roads slower to travel.
