Danum Valley covers 438 square kilometres of primary dipterocarp forest with an intact canopy exceeding 90 metres. Long before the forest floor receives any direct light, the resident wildlife begins a highly structured acoustic sequence. You will understand the early alarm when you step onto the suspended walkway to hear the birds.

The early morning hours

The primary dipterocarp canopy regularly exceeds 90 metres in height. This immense vertical column gives the wildlife infinite places to hide. A guided 3-day stay records 130 to 160 bird species including up to 20 Bornean endemics on most stays. To achieve those numbers you need to follow the biological clock of the rainforest. The best hour of the day happens before breakfast.

A common instruction on travel itineraries is to wake at 4am to catch the forest waking up. That leaves you waiting in total darkness for 1 hour before the earliest recorded gibbon call. Astronomical twilight in Lahad Datu begins around 4:51am. The absolute earliest a gibbon has been recorded singing at Danum is 5am. By 5:30am the ambient light is sufficient to navigate the trails safely and the acoustic activity is building. The forest floor remains profoundly dark until 7:30am so you will hear animals long before you see them.

The Bornean gibbon

The resident Bornean gibbon dictates the start of the Danum dawn chorus. The male gibbon solo call is a realistic target to open the morning. Research places the median start time for these solos at 5:46am. A male solo is a long and resonant song that carries for kilometres across the valley. The mean duration for these early calls is 41.4 minutes. Coordinated male-female duets happen later in the morning. A duet has a median start time of 7:38am and averages 15.1 minutes in length.

The physical structure of a climax dipterocarp forest heavily degrades certain sounds. Dense foliage and thick trunks absorb high frequencies rapidly. The animals share the forest's soundscape by calling at different times and pitches. They time their calls to avoid overlapping with competing species. Canopy dwellers use different frequency ranges than ground dwellers. This evolutionary adaptation creates the predictable sequence you hear as the sun rises.

The Great Argus

As the gibbons claim the high frequencies the terrestrial birds dominate the low frequencies. The Great Argus is a large ground-dwelling bird heard on most stays. It uses low-frequency pure tones to maximise transmission distance through the dense underbrush. The short call is a high-pitched "kau-wow" lasting under a second. This call peaks between 6am and noon. The long call consists of 15 to 72 hoots that progressively rise in pitch.

While the long call peaks at dusk between 6pm and 7pm, autonomous recording units show that 20 percent of all Great Argus calls at Danum happen at night. This nocturnal calling decreases during a full moon to avoid predators. The Takala Bird Observation Station at Borneo Rainforest Lodge sits near an active argus dancing ground. If you wait in absolute silence observing the male display is a realistic target.

The eight hornbill species

Borneo hosts 8 species of hornbills and all 8 maintain resident populations at Danum Valley. You hear a hornbill on most stays long before you establish a visual line of sight. Strangling fig trees draw hornbills to feed. A single fruiting fig tree attracts Helmeted, Rhinoceros, Wreathed and Bushy-crested hornbills simultaneously during feeding frenzies. The Rhinoceros hornbill lacks under-wing coverts. Its wingbeats produce a heavy whooshing sound comparable to a steam engine. The birds fly over the canopy in pairs or small family units.

The Helmeted hornbill was uplisted to Critically Endangered in 2015. Its solid keratin casque constitutes up to 13 percent of its body weight. Its auditory signature is a haunting and accelerating hoot that culminates in a manic laughing cackle. It stays in the tallest emergent dipterocarps. A Bushy-crested hornbill flock is noisy and chaotic. They travel in groups of 5 to 15 birds and forage actively in the mid-canopy.

The Wreathed hornbill is highly nomadic and travels in direct high-altitude flight across the valley to locate fruiting events. The Wrinkled hornbill is an Endangered species favouring primary lowland forest. It is less vocal than the Rhinoceros hornbill but its wings produce a loud whoosh overhead on most stays. The Black hornbill forages in the mid-to-lower canopy and along riverine corridors. The Oriental pied hornbill is resident on the fringes of the reserve.

Small birds and terrestrial endemics

The smaller passerines form a dense mid-frequency component of the morning acoustic environment. The Black-capped babbler and Scaly-crowned babbler are a realistic target in the early hours. A prominent canopy species is the Bornean bristlehead. It is resident in noisy family flocks and emits a bizarre repertoire of grunts, whistles and chattering.

The Bulwer's pheasant is a bonus for early risers in Danum Valley. If this pheasant is your primary target the sub-montane Trusmadi range is a realistic choice.

Finding these terrestrial endemics requires patience and a specialist guide. A general nature guide points out what is visible. A specialist birding guide knows the calls well enough to track a wren-babbler or a pitta by ear. The Blue-headed pitta and Black-crowned pitta are resident Bornean endemics responsive to acoustic tracking in the lowland trails. The Blue-banded pitta is resident in hilly terrain and requires steep trail trekking. The Giant pitta is resident in the darkest primary ravines. The Blue-winged pitta is a northern winter migrant in season between October and March.

Places to listen

Your physical location alters your perception of the dawn chorus. The Borneo Rainforest Lodge canopy walkway is suspended high above the forest floor where you can listen among the canopy birds. Standing here places you directly in the acoustic transmission zone of the gibbons and canopy birds. High-frequency calls from the Violet cuckoo ring clearly at this elevation. The walkway is suspended and subject to heavy vibration from footsteps. A construction and expansion project runs at Borneo Rainforest Lodge from 1 January 2025 to 22 January 2027 to add 9 chalets.

At ground level the dynamics change completely. The trail network soundscape is dominated by the low-frequency booming of the argus and the rustling of terrestrial species. The Danum Valley Study Centre offers rigid observation structures and a 6am dawn walk nearby to listen to the morning calls. Another excellent acoustic vantage point is Hornbill Corner at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. It overlooks the Danum River and provides a clear auditory path for Lesser fish-eagles and hornbills in flight.

Rain and the dawn chorus

The weather actively shrinks the acoustic space at Danum Valley. Sabah has no single dry season and rain falls all year. A clear sunny morning shapes the acoustic space. Rainfall the night before delays male gibbon solos by at least 30 minutes. After using energy to keep warm through a wet night, the apes feed first before spending energy on their morning songs. The amount of rain in the preceding 24 hours accounts for 30 percent of the variance in gibbon solo events.

Rain during the morning completely suppresses Great Argus calling. The broad-spectrum white noise of heavy rain masks acoustic signals and adds thermoregulatory costs for the birds. The immediate post-rain window is excellent for birding because insect hatches trigger intense canopy feeding.

Photography and trail equipment

Executing wildlife photography during the dawn chorus pushes modern camera gear to its limits. Moving equipment from an air-conditioned room into 96 percent humidity immediately induces severe condensation on lenses. The forest floor remains profoundly dark until mid-morning. Photographers need fast prime lenses of f/2.8 or f/4 and must accept the image noise that comes with high ISO settings.

Night walks commence around 8pm. Headlamps with dedicated red-light modes are critical in this environment. Standard white beams destroy your night vision and attract dense swarms of insects directly to your face.

Tripods are counterproductive on the BRL canopy walkway because the structure acts as a tuning fork. You need monopods or advanced in-body stabilisation. The 2 new ground hides completed in late 2024 feature flat dirt floors explicitly designed for tripod stability. If you stay at the Study Centre you must manage your batteries carefully to ensure your camera is ready for the dawn walk.

Walking the dark trails requires the right footwear. Standard waterproof hiking boots become waterlogged and never dry in the humidity. Local guides wear rubber Kampung Adidas shoes because they are completely waterproof, dry in minutes and resist leeches. Leech socks worn over regular socks and tied below the knee are mandatory for every trek.
