Semporna is the mainland departure point for Sabah's most famous diving. Boats leave for Sipadan's pelagic walls, macro sites at Mabul and Kapalai, and private-island resorts at Mataking and Pom Pom.

The coral archipelago
About 45 minutes by speedboat from the mainland dock, the Celebes Sea opens into a network of volcanic reefs and coral cays. The archipelago holds the pelagic drop-offs of Sipadan , an oceanic pinnacle famous for tornados of barracuda, and the muck-diving sites of Mabul and Kapalai, which suit divers focused on rare macro life.
If you sequence your travel correctly, you can wake up in primary rainforest and end the day over the water.

The Celebes Sea seasons
Semporna receives around 2,342 mm of rain annually, with rain on most days. The green season runs roughly November to February; peak season runs roughly March to October. March and April are the calmest and least wet months.

You reach Semporna through Tawau airport. You take a private transfer or minivan for the 75-to-90-minute drive to the Semporna jetty. Speedboat transits to the islands take about 45 minutes.
