Semporna's floating resorts
Semporna's water villages offer a stay built directly over the coral reefs. Here is the honest picture of what they provide and how to find the right one for your trip.
Semporna's floating resorts
An hour's boat ride from the Semporna mainland, water villages sit on wooden stilts above the coral reefs of the Celebes Sea. You wake to clear ocean views and step straight from the wooden veranda into the water to snorkel. With the 18:00 regional sea curfew in place, evenings are spent on the water villages enjoying dinner and the ocean breeze.
Most water villages include meals in your stay so you can settle in without planning where to eat. A typical stay provides 3 meals a day often featuring fresh local seafood alongside afternoon tea and sometimes an evening barbecue on the deck. At properties like Moana Water Village the kitchen prepares excellent meals including sea urchin and the dining is highly praised by guests for its quality and generosity.
Activities focus entirely on the water around you. Good water villages include complimentary access to paddleboards, kayaks, glass-bottom boats and high-quality snorkelling gear. You can put on a life jacket and snorkel straight off the property's steps into the coral environment. Staff keep an eye on guests in the water to ensure things are safe while you look for clownfish and turtles.
Be sure to ask the team about specific dietary requirements when you book. Supplies are brought over from the mainland and kitchens need advance notice to arrange alternatives. The villages sit in a remote maritime environment. Anything you need must be planned before you leave the jetty.

EnquireYes, the verified water villages are safe and staffed round the clock. The entire region operates under the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE) dusk-to-dawn curfew. Maritime police patrol the waters and all boats are off the sea between 18:00 and 06:00.

If Sipadan is your priority, the team can arrange a resort and dive package with a guaranteed permit and confirm what applies to your dates; the island closes every November and reopens on 1 December.
Semporna receives rain in some form on around 278 days a year with December typically bringing the most rainfall and the highest chance of a delayed boat crossing. Because your room is built over the sea, you can watch the weather pass from your covered veranda.
