Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary
The protected corridor is the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, covering roughly 26,000 hectares of forest. The region is intensively researched, and the broken canopy forces wild orangutans to cross clearings on the ground. Proboscis monkeys thrive here, and Bornean pygmy elephants heavily use the lower river as floodwaters recede.
Boat safaris cover kilometres of habitat in a single afternoon. The open sky above the river makes photography easier than in the dark forest understorey. A standard stay involves dawn and dusk cruises. Premium lodges use electric motors for quiet approaches.

Rainfall and river levels
Rain falls year-round. April to September is a productive window for wildlife viewing as floodwaters recede. Pygmy elephant sightings along the riverbanks peak between April and August.

Speedboat and overland transfers
A Kinabatangan cruise pairs well with other Sabah wildlife destinations. Most itineraries start with 1 night in Sepilok to see the sun bears before taking the speedboat to Abai. You spend 3 days on the river looking for resident primates then transfer overland to Danum Valley to experience the ancient primary rainforest on foot.
Access from Sandakan
Access to Abai involves a scenic 1.5-hour speedboat transfer departing from the Sandakan Yacht Club. The lodges at Sukau and Bilit are reached by a 2 to 3-hour drive from Sandakan or Lahad Datu. Dedicated birders can add a dusk excursion to the Gomantong Caves to witness the mass emergence of bats.
