The 14-day itinerary
The standard 14-day itinerary follows a strict montane-then-lowland progression. This is built around human endurance. The high-altitude trails of the Crocker Range and Kinabalu Park are physically demanding. Plan your birding trip to Sabah so that these locations fall in your first 5 days, while your energy is fresh. The temperatures at 1,500 metres sit around a comfortable 15 to 20 °C.
After the mountains the route descends to mid-elevation sites like Poring Hot Springs. By day 8 you transition to the Kinabatangan River. Motorised boat cruising provides vital physical recovery time before you tackle the extreme heat and humidity of the lowland dipterocarp forests at Danum Valley or Tabin Wildlife Reserve in search of Bornean firebacks.
Mount Kinabalu trails
Mount Kinabalu is the undisputed centre of montane birding in Borneo. The paved Power Station Road winds steeply upward from here to the Timpohon Gate at 1,866 metres.
Poring Hot Springs
After the mountains, the circuit descends to mid-elevation Poring Hot Springs before continuing to the Kinabatangan River.

Danum Valley
2.5 hours by road from Lahad Datu, Danum Valley is 438 square kilometres of lowland rainforest that was never logged with three very different places to stay inside it.
Tabin Wildlife Reserve
A 122,500-hectare lowland reserve bordered by oil palm, Tabin is Sabah’s premier destination for night drives. The sharp forest edge concentrates small cats and civets along the boundary roads.
