The 2 Bornean firebacks
Situated 2.5 hours from Lahad Datu, Danum Valley is 438 square kilometres of lowland rainforest sheltering Borneo's distinct endemic pheasants and Bornean pittas. Recent taxonomic updates confirm the crested and crestless firebacks are full species, making them essential subjects for a dedicated photography tour.
The Bornean Crested Fireback is a large bird of the mixed dipterocarp forests. The adult male carries an iridescent dark blue head and upright crest. The Bornean Crestless Fireback is considerably more elusive, relying on dense waterlogged peat swamp forests.
Danum Valley and Tabin
Look for crested firebacks near Borneo Rainforest Lodge's staff quarters and along its access road. At Tabin, try the main dirt tracks early in the morning.
Best season and tracking
The pre-breeding window from March to May is the optimal period. Resident species are highly vocal establishing territories. Specialist birding guides listen for subtle acoustic cues while walking the trails in the early morning to track these birds.
