Located 2 hours by road from Sandakan, this wildlife base sits on tall stilts above the muddy banks of the Kinabatangan River. A network of wooden boardwalks connects the central restaurant to 24 ironwood chalets surrounded by protected lowland rainforest. You stay here for the scheduled river cruises to look for proboscis monkeys and Bornean pygmy elephants in the wild.
This is a dedicated wildlife base designed to get you onto the river. The property blends into the lowland tropical rainforest of Kampung Bilit upstream from Sukau. The lodge operates as a bundled experience rather than an independent hotel. Your stay includes full-board meals and scheduled boat safaris. This creates a structured day that ensures you are on the water when the animals are most active.
Because the Kinabatangan floodplain is prone to seasonal inundation, the entire complex sits on tall stilts. A network of wooden boardwalks connects the central restaurant and tour desk to the individual chalets and the private jetty. The environment here is wild. Primate troops frequently move directly through the lodge grounds and the thick jungle starts right at the edge of the verandas.
A day on the Kinabatangan revolves around the river. Breakfast runs from 6:30am to 10am. You then head out on a morning cruise. The mist is still on the water and the birds are most active. You return for lunch between 12:30pm and 2pm. The early afternoon is free to rest in your chalet or watch the canopy from the central lounge. Afternoon tea is available from 3:30pm to 4pm if you book it in advance.

The Bilit segment of the river sits in a topographical bottleneck with higher mudstone hills. This makes it a critical crossing point for Bornean pygmy elephants. Tracking data shows that herds use these upper segments heavily to transit between fragmented forest blocks. Sightings along the banks are a realistic target during the drier months from April to August. Long-tailed macaques and pig-tailed macaques are ubiquitous along the riverbanks and are often observed foraging in the mud. The silvered langur and the maroon langur are also frequently seen foraging in the mid-canopy.

How to get there

Bilit Rainforest Lodge is remote and requires a two-stage journey. Most guests arrive via Sandakan. From the city or the airport, you take an overland drive of roughly 2 hours through rural countryside to reach the Kampung Bilit Jetty. From there, you make a short boat transfer across the Kinabatangan River to the lodge's private wooden docks. Be sure to have your camera ready during the boat transfer as wildlife can appear at any moment.
