A field station at the edge of the basin
Set 27 kilometres inside the gates, this working research station is the only staging post for multi-day treks into a 58,840-hectare protected forest. You sleep in private rooms or open-air trail camps before walking from the Agathis trailhead to the 27-metre Maliau Falls. Trek through the montane heath forest to look for massive pitcher plants and the rare Bornean bristlehead.
From the centre, 4WD vehicles run trekkers to the Agathis trailhead to begin the multi-day circuit into the basin. To see the 28-metre Maliau Falls and the vast carnivorous pitcher plants of the high rim, you have to leave the centre behind and walk.
The entire 58,840-hectare Maliau Basin is managed exclusively by the Conservation and Environmental Management Division of Yayasan Sabah. The centre holds a Global Sustainable Tourism Council certification for its low-impact design.

Preparation
Buffet meals and trail gear
Stays at the Studies Centre and the trail camps operate on a full-board basis. At the centre, meals are served as self-service buffets in the Dalit Dining Hall. The food is straightforward Malaysian home-style cooking with Halal ingredients brought in from Tawau. On the trail the centre provides packed lunches and the rangers prepare hot dinners at the camps.

Pitcher plants and resident banteng
Bornean pygmy elephants and banteng are resident here. Clouded leopards and Bornean sun bears are recorded on camera traps and seen with luck on foot.
Common questions
Forest rangers and leech socks
No. You should expect a total digital blackout. The rangers rely on VHF radios to communicate with the security gatehouse.
Only designated short nature trails around the centre allow self-guided walking. The interior loop requires an in-house Yayasan Sabah guide or forest ranger.
Yes. Leeches are prolific in the humid lowland and lower montane forests. Leech socks are highly recommended.
While not strictly mandatory, a local porter is heavily recommended to let you focus on navigating the steep terrain. Porters carry up to 12 kg of personal gear.
Getting there
Overland route from Tawau
Fly into Tawau and travel overland. The drive takes around 4 to 5 hours. The final approach relies on deeply rutted logging tracks, so 4WD vehicles are strictly mandatory. Permits are arranged with the stay. Travel and health insurance is advised, and cover that includes emergency evacuation is sensible in a place this remote.
