The two main settlements

The Lower Kinabatangan River is a ribbon of protected forest running through agricultural land. Decades of habitat clearance forced the region's orangutans , proboscis monkeys and elephants into a narrow sanctuary along the riverbanks. That degradation actually benefits the Bornean pygmy elephants that eat the fast-growing pioneer plants thriving in the disturbed soil.

Sukau is the established centre with a high density of lodges and immediate access to narrow tributaries. Bilit is a smaller community further upstream where the river narrows and the topography allows for jungle trekking.

Proboscis monkeys disperse up to 1 kilometre inland during the day to forage in the peat swamps and return to the river edge at dusk.

Abai is accessible only by boat and feels significantly wilder than the upriver hubs. Combining Abai with either Sukau or Bilit is a popular choice to see the distinct ecosystems. Premium lodges and combination itineraries use fast boats directly from Sandakan.

Getting there

Sandakan is the starting point for Kinabatangan journeys. The total transit time from Sandakan airport or the city hotels to the Sukau jetties is roughly 2 hours. The drive to Bilit takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours on sealed roads.
